Tips to Improve Communication with Parents
Prior to discussing nutrition concepts with parents, it is important to establish a foundation of open communication!
- Open communication is when people feel comfortable in sharing their thoughts and ideas with one another in an honest, consistent, and dependable way.
- Establish a good rapport
- Ensure that your students' parents are aware of your availability to be contacted - optimal time to receive calls/messages
- Provide opportunity for parents to express their own thoughts/concerns
- Provide parents with multiple routes to communicate with you (ex. face-to-face, phone, email, etc.)
- Respond to parents' messages in a timely manner
- Communicate with parents often - not only to provide information or contacting them when a problem arises
- Did you know? Having open lines of communication with parents will make them feel heard and respected; and will encourage parents to be more receptive and willing to take the time to engage in discussions with you.
