Sugar-Sweetened Beverages in the Classroom

Although many schools may follow nutrition policies regarding the sale of food/drinks for school lunches, there is often less regulation on the items children bring to school in their bags & lunchboxes.

As the teacher, you have the ability to promote healthy nutrition practices & regulate the types of beverages your students drink in the classroom and/or at lunch.

Tips to Reduce Sugary Drink Consumption in the Classroom

Have class discussions about healthy drink options and the importance of drinking water throughout the day.

Encourage your students to bring water bottles to school to drink during snack and lunch.

Avoid negative discussions about sugary drinks – be sure to let your students know that all beverages in moderation are acceptable.

Be a good role model! Make sure your students see you drinking water and healthy beverage options throughout the school day.

Try not to drink sugary drinks in front of your students as this will send conflicting messages and can persuade the children to want sugary drinks as well.

Share your viewpoint of healthy drink options with your students’ parents to encourage healthy drink choices in the home.

Discuss implementing classroom or school-wide nutrition policies with your school administrator!
